The masterminds behind Paramount Plus’s Star Trek lineup have been hinting at it for a while, but now it’s almost official: the next Star Trek show, following the still-in-the-works Section 31, is likely to be Starfleet Academy. “It will be pitched to Paramount+ shortly,” according to Deadline, “and the hope is to get it going in the next year.”
Last fall, Star Trek ship’s captain Alex Kurztman noted “I know there’s been a lot of conversation about Starfleet Academy, which we are very excited about.” He continued, “When we talked about, there’s this new generation that’s going to inherit the problems of the old generation, what are they going to do to make the world better to solve it, how are we going to avoid the mistakes of our elders, and how are we going to learn from the wisdom of our elders — that’s a really wonderful thing to consider when you think about something like Starfleet Academy.”

A similar theme was on display in the Star Trek: Discovery episode “All Is Possible” (pictured above) which found Tilly leading a gaggle of awkward cadets on a training mission—and David Cronenberg’s Kovich musing on how kids born after the Burn grew up in a very different world than the one Discovery‘s crew lived in.
Last week, Kurtzman confirmed that “there is another one,” meaning another show, after Section 31, but wouldn’t get specific, saying “There’s a bunch of things in development now that are starting to take shape and we’re super excited about it.” But Deadline’s sources say Gaia Violo (co-creator of the series Absentia) is working on the Starfleet Academy project.
What’s less clear is how these in-development shows relate to the current Trek lineup. Last year, Kurtzman suggested that any new Trek series wouldn’t air until one of the current five had run its course. But Paramount Plus’s president of original scripted series, Nicole Clemens, hinted that that might not be the case, saying “I think you may see a few more very curated additions coming.”
The first half of Star Trek: Prodigy‘s first season comes to an end tomorrow, February 3rd. Star Trek: Discovery resumes its fourth season on February 4th. Star Trek: Picard‘s second season premieres March 3rd. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres May 5th. Star Trek: Lower Decks will return, probably later this year, for a third season.
